MILESTONES, Page 107
DIED. Max Gordon, 86, shrewd Greenwich Village club owner and
jazz promoter; in New York City. For 55 years Gordon operated the
Village Vanguard in the heart of Manhattan's bohemia, where his
unerring ear resulted in the discoveries of Judy Holliday, Betty
Comden and Adolph Green and the showcasing of such jazz
instrumentalists as John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. A father
figure to fledgling stage talent, he helped launch the careers of
Barbra Streisand, Pearl Bailey and Woody Allen.
